The Sitkovetsky Trio returns to Hobart following its very popular MVT concert in 2014. Their dynamic, high-energy performances, combined with their thoughtful and committed approach, have brought many top international awards and much critical acclaim. Formed in England in 2007, Sitkovetsky has quickly established itself as one of the world’s pre-eminent trios. Its many recordings are testament to the wide range of its repertoire.
Rachmaninov’s first piano trio is a masterful singlemovement work written when the composer was just 19. Its lilting melodies and rich emotional range take their cue from Tchaikovsky. Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2, written during World War II, is a lamentation for the victims of the Holocaust. Its famous final movement turns a Jewish folk melody into a chilling dance of death. In contrast, Lachlan Skipworth’s 2015 Piano Trio evokes the Australian landscape by means of the ancient musical traditions of Japan. This richly varied concert ends with Mendelssohn’s passionately romantic first piano trio, which Schumann described as ‘the master trio of our age’.
Tickets will be available for purchase at the venue 30 minutes prior to the performance.
