This superb concert brings together one of the world’s leading cellists and Australia’s best-loved chamber music ensemble. Now in its second decade, the Flinders Quartet is in great demand for festivals throughout Australia and is a warm favourite among Musica Viva audiences. Timo-Veikko ‘Tipi’ Valve is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation. In 2006, he was appointed Principal Cello of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and he curates the ACO’s chamber music series in Sydney
Peter Sculthorpe’s eighteenth string quartet was his last, premiering on the composer’s 81st birthday. The many long, drone-like notes, written with the didjeridu in mind, seem to magically evoke the Australian landscape. From there, we are cast back to late 18th-century Spain and the joyous, infectious rhythms of Boccherini’s ‘Fandango’ quintet, complete with castanets. It will have you dancing in the aisles. Schubert’s last chamber work, the sublime String quintet in C major, brings a complete change of mood. Widely regarded as one of the greatest of all chamber music compositions, it is, by turns, dramatic, heroic and filled with longing.
Tickets will be available for purchase at the venue 30 minutes prior to the performance.
